Holland, Michigan · Chip repair

Rock chip and windshield repair in Holland, MI.

A rock chip caught early is a quick resin fill: usually about fifteen minutes, far cheaper than a windshield, and often covered by insurance with little or no deductible. Leave it through one Michigan cold snap and it spreads into a crack, and a crack usually means a new windshield. Call while it's still small.

The real question

Can this be repaired, or is it a new windshield?

Almost everyone who calls asks the same thing. Here's the honest rule of thumb, before you spend a dime.

Usually a fix

A chip or a short crack

Smaller than a quarter, or a crack a few inches long, away from the edge and out of your line of sight. That's a resin fill: quick, cheap, and it stops the spread before it becomes the other column.

Usually a replacement

A long crack, or one at the edge

A crack that's run long, reached the edge of the glass, or sits in the driver's line of sight. A fill won't hold or won't be safe, so a new windshield is the right call.

You won't guess wrong on your own. Send a photo or bring it by, we tell you which one it is before anything's ordered, and we won't sell you a windshield you don't need.

How it goes

Fifteen minutes, start to finish.

01

Show us the chip

Send a photo or call. We tell you if it's a repair or a replacement, and the price, before you come in.

02

Clean it out

We clear the break of air and debris so the resin can bond to clean glass. This is the step that makes a repair last.

03

Fill and cure

Resin is injected under pressure to fill the break, then cured hard. The spot stops spreading and gets its strength back.

04

Drive away

No cure-time wait like a replacement. The repair is done and you're back on the road the same visit.

What it costs

The cheapest fix in the whole shop.

Chip repair is a fraction of a windshield, and it is often the difference between a small bill today and a big one next month.

Far less than a replacement.

A chip repair is one of the cheapest jobs we do. One customer wrote that hers was 50 dollars and took 15 minutes, the "easiest car repair ever." Your price depends on the damage, and we quote it before we start.

Does insurance cover it?

Often, and often with little or no deductible, because insurers would rather pay for a small repair now than a full windshield later. Bring your insurer and policy and we'll tell you what your claim covers first. We help you get the claim set up, and from there we handle it.

Before your appointment

How to keep a chip from becoming a crack.

You can't fix it yourself, but you can buy time until we get you in. A few things help, and a couple of things make it worse.

Do

Cover it and keep it clean

A piece of clear tape over the chip keeps dirt and moisture out of the break, which helps the resin bond when we fill it.

Don't

Blast the defroster or AC straight at it

Fast temperature swings are exactly what turn a chip into a running crack. In winter, warm the glass up gradually.

Don't

Slam doors or hammer rough roads

A sealed cabin and a hard pothole both flex the glass, and that flex is often what makes a chip finally take off.

Do

Call sooner than later

None of this stops a chip forever, it just buys days, not weeks. The fix is quick and cheap while it's still a chip.

Why it's worth calling today

A chip is stable until it isn't.

Glass expands and contracts with temperature, and Michigan gives it plenty of practice. A cold windshield hit with a warm defrost, or a warm one hit with cold rain, is exactly how a repairable chip becomes a crack that needs a whole new windshield.

The chip you can fix for a little today is the windshield you replace for a lot next month. That's the whole reason to call while it's small.

Chip repair, answered

Can my windshield chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield?

Most small rock chips can be repaired if you catch them early, before the damage spreads into a long crack. As a rough guide, a chip smaller than a quarter and a crack shorter than a few inches, away from the edge and out of the driver's line of sight, is usually repairable. Once a crack runs long or reaches the edge, replacement is normally the safer option. Send a photo or call and we'll tell you which one you're looking at.

How much does chip repair cost?

Chip repair is one of the cheaper things we do, far less than a full windshield. One customer wrote that a chip repair was $50 and took 15 minutes. Your price depends on the damage, and many insurance policies cover glass repair with little or no deductible because it's cheaper than a replacement. Call 616-396-3487 for a number.

How long does a chip repair take?

Usually about 15 to 30 minutes. We clean out the chip, inject resin under pressure to fill the break, and cure it so it stops spreading and the glass is stronger there again. You can drive right away.

Will the chip disappear completely?

A good repair fills the break, stops it from spreading, and restores strength, and it usually leaves the spot far less visible than it was. It doesn't always vanish completely. If it were going to leave a mark in your line of sight, we'll tell you before we start and talk through your options.

Does insurance cover windshield chip repair?

Often, yes, and often with little or no deductible, because insurers would rather pay for a small repair than a full windshield later. Bring your insurer and policy and we'll tell you what your claim covers before we do anything. We help you get the claim set up, and from there we handle it.

How soon should I get a chip fixed?

As soon as you can. A chip is stable until it's not. A temperature swing, a bump, or a Michigan cold snap can turn a repairable chip into a crack that needs a whole new windshield. Fixing it early is the cheaper call almost every time.

Can you fix it the same day?

Often, yes. Chip repairs are quick and customers regularly mention same-day appointments. Call 616-396-3487 and we'll tell you the soonest we can get you in.

Is it safe to drive with a chip in my windshield?

A small chip usually isn't an immediate danger, but it's a countdown. A chip weakens the glass and can spread across your line of sight with one temperature swing or bump, and a large crack in the driver's view is both a safety and a legal problem. The safe move is to get it filled while it's still small.

How long does a repaired chip last?

A proper repair is permanent. Once the break is cleaned, filled with resin, and cured, it's sealed and strengthened, and it won't keep spreading from that spot. It restores the glass rather than being a temporary patch.

That crack isn't going to fix itself.

Tell us the year, make, and model. We'll tell you the price and the day.
